An analysis published on October 26 found a net upward revision of $99.44 billion (about €88.9 billion) in nominal GDP estimates for 52 African countries. It compared the International Monetary Fund's April and October 2026 World Economic Outlook editions. Estimates increased for 34 countries and fell for the other 18.
Guinea recorded the largest upward revision in dollar terms among the countries compared, followed by Algeria and Egypt. These figures measure changes in nominal estimates expressed in US dollars. Exchange rates, inflation, revised national accounts and changes in IMF assumptions can all affect them, so a larger estimate does not necessarily represent an equivalent increase in real output or purchasing power.
Separately, the IMF's October regional outlook projects sub-Saharan African growth of 4.5% in both 2026 and 2027. Renewed conflict involving Iran presents risks through energy costs and disrupted shipping. Those pressures differ between countries that import oil and those that export it.
