Business confidence in Germany improved slightly in October, according to the ifo Institute's survey released on October 26. Its business climate index rose to 90.2 points from 89.9 in September. Companies were more optimistic about the months ahead, although their overall assessment of their current position became slightly less favourable.
Manufacturers reported substantially better conditions and expectations. Both indicators moved into positive territory for the first time in more than three years. Incoming orders increased, and companies planned to expand production. Construction sentiment also improved, with a noticeable rise in assessments of current business and a smaller improvement in expectations.
The picture was less favourable in services, where weaker views of current performance outweighed improved expectations. IT service providers performed particularly well, however. The trade indicator was unchanged as current assessments weakened and expectations improved slightly. Wholesalers fared better than retailers. The ifo Institute assesses that Germany's economic recovery is continuing.
