Uganda's annual headline inflation rose to 4.6% in September from 4.1% in August, according to the finance ministry's September economic-performance report. The ministry attributed the pressure partly to unfavourable weather that reduced food-crop supplies, as well as higher transport and energy production costs. Annual food-crop and related-item inflation increased to 4.5% from 2.1%.
Energy, fuel and utilities inflation edged up to 14.5% from 14.3%. Core inflation, which excludes some volatile changes, rose to 3.7% from 3.5%. At a special meeting on October 14, the Bank of Uganda raised its central bank rate from 9.75% to 12%. The report says this aimed to contain inflation and limit wider effects of energy costs and currency depreciation.
Business conditions continued to improve, but more slowly. The private-sector purchasing managers index fell to 53.0 in September from 55.0 in August, remaining above the 50 threshold for improvement. Businesses reported rising output and new orders supported by customer demand, although higher energy, transport and production costs slowed progress.
