Audi, the German premium carmaker in the Volkswagen Group, announced plans on October 25 for its first US vehicle-production plant in Georgia. It intends to invest around $4 billion and create approximately 4,500 jobs. However, Volkswagen Group said a decision to build the plant still required approval from the relevant corporate committees.
Construction is scheduled for 2027, with vehicle production planned for the early 2030s. The proposed factory would have capacity to make up to 200,000 vehicles a year, producing premium SUVs for North American customers. The planned location is the Middle Georgia Mega Site, which the announcement says has room for later expansion.
Audi aims to establish North America as a third major part of its manufacturing network alongside Europe and China. The company says local production would reduce its exposure to trade and currency risks. It also says Germany and Europe will remain its industrial backbone, providing engineering and production expertise.
