Firefighters in Brusque, Brazil, rescued a dog from a locked apartment after its owners left to help an elderly neighbouring couple during a fire. The incident happened at about 11:20 p.m. on Friday, October 23, on Rua Gustavo Krieger in the city centre. The fire affected the elderly couple's apartment, and some residents had to leave the building for safety.
The dog was in the apartment next door. When its owners went to assist the couple, a door fitted with an automatic lock shut behind them, trapping the animal inside. Firefighters forced the door open and took the dog out. Two fire engines and an ambulance attended the emergency.
A fire-service sergeant gave the dog oxygen after the rescue as a precaution because it might have inhaled smoke. Firefighters also brought the flames under control. A clothes dryer was suspected as the origin of the fire, although the cause had not been officially confirmed.
