The 78th Shosoin Exhibition opened at Nara National Museum in Nara, Japan, on October 24. It is scheduled to run through November 9 without a closed day. First held in 1946, the exhibition marks its 80th anniversary this year. The Shosoin collection includes possessions of Emperor Shomu, who ruled Japan during the eighth-century Nara period.
This year's exhibits include decorated red and blue ivory pieces used in the board game go. A lacquered ewer brings together a vessel form originating in Persia and East Asian lacquer craftsmanship. Other displayed objects include a white glass vessel, a decorated box and a Buddhist scripture. The wider collection contains about 9,000 items, including crafts and documents about daily life.
The exhibition coincides with the annual autumn inspection of the treasures, when the repository's imperial seal is opened. Originally part of Todaiji temple, the repository is now managed by the Imperial Household Agency's Shosoin office.
