A high-school student in Pennsylvania, United States, shared his homecoming crown and sash with a fellow candidate during a school pep rally on October 16, 2026. Keny Ramirez had just been announced as homecoming king at Mahanoy Area when he noticed his friend Axton becoming emotional.
Ramirez said he had been surprised to win and was initially happy, before noticing that Axton was crying. Axton has Down syndrome, and Ramirez said he wanted to cheer his friend up. A video showing the exchange of the crown and sash subsequently attracted attention on social media.
Ramirez said his younger brother has autism and that he hoped others would show his brother similar kindness in the same situation. He credited his mother with teaching him the values that guided his gesture. Despite no longer having the crown and title, he said he enjoyed homecoming even more than he had expected.
