Taiwanese electronic-paper display company E Ink announced a partnership with Japan's FUJIFILM Imaging Systems on October 21 to establish a large-format colour electronic-paper signage business for Japan's railway sector. Introduction of selected sizes in 2027 depends on successful prototype assessments.
The companies plan a 55-inch Marquee prototype for December 2026 and mass production for March 2027. A B1-size prototype is planned for October 2027, followed by planned mass production in January 2028. Support would cover customer proposals, installation and ongoing operation. E Ink supplies the display technology, while Fujifilm Imaging Systems brings railway customer relationships and installation and operational experience.
The companies cite labour shortages as one reason to explore electronic displays in the railway sector. They also point to the costs of printing paper posters, transporting them, installing them and disposing of them. E Ink says its electronic-paper displays allow digital updates and use little electricity.
