Archiving Lebanon's Heritage, a participatory digital archive, has launched at the National Library in Beirut, Lebanon, inviting contributions of local stories and personal memories. Its scope includes tangible, intangible and natural heritage, against a background of war-related damage to cultural sites. Family photographs, letters, maps, songs and videos can be submitted.
Contributors can include Lebanese residents and the diaspora, as well as travellers, collectors and scholars worldwide. They retain ownership of their documents and can choose private or public access and whether to remain anonymous. The partners are Lebanon's Ministry of Culture's General Directorate of Antiquities and the Heritage International Institute, an Italian institute protecting cultural heritage internationally. The institute was founded in 2024.
A joint scientific committee from the two partners must approve submitted files. Approved material is to be stored on European infrastructure through Dariah-It, coordinated by CNR, with security protocols and long-term preservation measures. Lebanese authorities have not yet completed their assessment of cultural damage.
