Job vacancies in the United Kingdom fell to 691,000 in the three months to September 2026, according to labour-market figures released by the Office for National Statistics on October 20. That compares with 704,000 in the three months to August. The official statistics agency said the decline was concentrated in smaller businesses.
Separate tax office estimates showed the number of payrolled employees rising by a preliminary 13,000 in September. The August estimate was revised from a fall of 26,000 to an increase of 1,000. The ONS put unemployment at 4.7% for the three months to August, while the survey used to measure it is undergoing an overhaul.
Average weekly earnings excluding bonuses grew by 3.7% from a year earlier in the three months to August. Private-sector pay growth rose from 2.9% to 3.0%. The Bank of England is watching whether an energy shock spreads into wages and wider inflation. Investors expect its benchmark Bank Rate to be 4% at its November meeting; its inflation target is 2%.
