Indian Union Minister Jitendra Singh has proposed using nuclear energy alongside other energy programmes to supply artificial intelligence and data centres. Speaking on the sidelines of an economic forum, he said these computing technologies require substantial amounts of electricity that is both continuous and reliable. He linked their power needs to India's energy plans.
He described AI as a tool for use across sectors, including space, life sciences, and scientific and technological development. Human judgement remained necessary, he said, warning of misuse by individuals and other actors. Responsible use, in his view, required integrity at both individual and national levels.
Singh cited a target of 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and India's goal of net zero emissions by 2070. He described the country's nuclear programme as serving peaceful applications and national development, recalling Homi Bhabha, the architect of that programme. He also said opening critical and sensitive sectors had expanded the scope for private participation.
