Flying Mud Boat, a tea house in Chino, Nagano prefecture, Japan, hangs from wires in the shape of a boat. Designed by architect Terunobu Fujimori, it was built for an exhibition in 2010. Its interior is usually closed to the public, although special guided tours allow visitors to climb inside by ladder.
Visiting reporter Natsuno Futon could not enter during a visit. Nearby are two more of Fujimori's tea houses, each taking a different position above or below the ground. Takasugian, meaning Too-High Teahouse, stands on two trees. Hikusugian, or Too-Low Teahouse, is partly underground.
The Japanese word chashitsu refers to a tea house built specifically for the tea ceremony. During the ceremony, matcha, a green tea ground into powder, is prepared and presented to guests. A traditional chashitsu has a floor covered in tatami mats and a hearth built into the room. Its design and materials are deliberately rustic.
