Argentina’s President Javier Milei credited deregulation and investment incentives for growth in the country’s oil and gas production at the opening of Argentina Oil & Gas Expo 2026. Speaking in Neuquén, Argentina, on October 19, he said national oil output reached 932,000 barrels per day in August 2026, compared with about 635,000 in 2023.

Milei said production from Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale formation rose from 310,000 barrels per day in 2023 to more than 670,000 in August 2026. He said national output that August surpassed the previous record, set in 1998. He also claimed that announced projects under the Large Investment Incentive Regime, known as RIGI, exceeded $210bn (about €187.1bn), with oil and gas accounting for 45%.

Those figures concern announced projects rather than completed investment. Milei rejected economists’ concerns about the programme’s potential fiscal cost, arguing that the projects and their tax receipts would otherwise not exist. He favoured lower taxes, fewer regulations, better infrastructure and lower domestic costs over currency devaluation as ways to improve competitiveness.
