United Arab Emirates University and Al Ain City Municipality held the 8th International Conference on Engineering Geophysics in Al Ain, UAE, from 13 to 15 October 2026. Researchers meeting on the university campus discussed groundwater problems in dry regions and the use of geophysics in cities and large infrastructure projects.
At an exhibition held alongside the conference, 30 organisations from the UAE and overseas showed technologies used to explore underground and carry out geophysical modelling. Scientific sessions and poster presentations gave researchers opportunities to present their work and discuss findings and practical applications with specialists from other countries. Organisers also provided grants to international students, enabling them to attend the meeting and give presentations about their research.
University chancellor Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh identified geological understanding, risk assessment, infrastructure monitoring and resource protection as needs associated with urban growth and climate change. The conference series began in 2011.
