In an interview about Argentina and cooperation on critical minerals in South America, mining lawyer Francisco Balduzzi described regulatory coordination as useful for projects crossing national boundaries. Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru signed a declaration in August concerning mining investment and critical minerals, setting out intentions for cooperation.
The declaration addresses responsible extraction, regional supply networks, geological research and technical working groups. Balduzzi said declarations alone cannot secure investment: consistent enforcement and political stability also matter. He identified differences in permitting and national regulations as practical obstacles to cooperation on mining projects across borders.
For mining suppliers based in Chile and Peru, he saw the possibility of providing services in neighbouring countries. He regarded demand for copper and the mineral potential of Argentina as opportunities for mining. He also stressed that geology influences investors' decisions about whether to put their money into mining projects.
