In an interview on investment in the region, mining lawyer Francisco Balduzzi described coordination of regulations as useful for mining projects that cross national boundaries. He identified differences in permitting and national regulations as practical obstacles to such projects. In his view, declarations alone cannot secure investment, because consistent enforcement of rules and political stability also matter.
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru signed an August declaration concerning mining investment and critical minerals. The declaration addresses responsible extraction, the development of regional supply networks, geological research and technical working groups. These are stated intentions for regional cooperation.
Balduzzi described mining suppliers from Chile and Peru as potential providers of services to neighbouring countries. He also regarded demand for copper and Argentina’s mineral potential as opportunities for investment. At the same time, he stressed the influence of geology on decisions about where to invest.
