AXL Systems, based in Kochi, develops retail equipment that reads RFID tags as well as drones. Its founder says customer requests took the company from software integration into hardware development. Led by chief executive Joe Kuncharia, the business began in consulting around 2013, became privately held in 2015 and employs more than 150 people.
Kuncharia says its RFID equipment handles merchandise checkout at Madison Square Garden, with a maximum reading rate of 300 tags per second. Readers connect to point-of-sale equipment over USB and process data locally. The system can also identify the tagged item that triggered an exit alarm. Trials are under way in India.
The company says it developed drones jointly with the Indian Army after making contact through public portals. Its domestically developed components include controllers, power boards, GPS modules and batteries. Kuncharia says recruiting engineers and obtaining imported parts can take longer in Kerala, describing constraints on the company’s hardware work.
