Nurse and social worker Beamlak Alemayehu established Medanit in Ethiopia in 2022 after seeing patients struggle to find medicines, tests and specialists during emergency-ward work in 2020. Initially conceived as a directory connecting people with available healthcare, the company added software for hospital operations, medical records and pharmacy stock. Alemayehu says roughly 80–90% of facilities she approached still used manual administration.
Patients can find clinicians, schedule tests, seek remote consultations and arrange medicine deliveries through the service. Access is available through a website, an app and Telegram, alongside a telephone service for people without smartphones or internet access. The founder reports 527 participating doctors and 1.2 million visitors across its channels since January 2026.
Alemayehu says limited income, medicine-delivery logistics and uncertain licensing rules constrain expansion. She won a Bayer Foundation entrepreneurship award in 2026, bringing mentoring and development support. She says entry into Rwanda and Zambia is planned by 2027.
