Argentina’s Economy Minister Luis Caputo forecast a marked recovery in the final quarter of 2026, pointing to construction, mortgages and improving inflation-adjusted pay as sources of growth. Speaking during the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, he rejected predictions of recession and argued that falling inflation could accompany renewed economic growth.
The forecast follows a 0.6% contraction in the second quarter and a further decline in July. Slower lending and a stronger inflation-adjusted peso have raised economists’ concerns about activity. Caputo said borrowing costs were easing and spare production capacity could support expansion. He maintained that reducing inflation remained the government’s priority.
Caputo also said banks reported improving loan repayment, although official statistics had yet to confirm that improvement. IMF regional director Nigel Chalk likewise expected growth to accelerate going into 2027. Caputo said renewed international borrowing would depend on competitive financing costs.
