LouLou is enjoying the couch and naps, says Lauren Padawer. The four-year-old poodle-husky mix is mellow at home but energetic on mountain trails, and regularly joins backcountry skiing trips. The family adopted her in 2023 after Padawer’s son wanted a husky. Padawer says LouLou is also cautious when meeting new people.
On October 10, an avalanche in Alaska’s Chugach State Park separated her from two mountaineers. Both mountaineers survived and were hospitalised with serious injuries. More than 20 people, including a scent-dog team, searched on foot. Overseas and more than 5,000 miles away, Padawer coordinated search contacts and compared satellite views with another mapping application.
Pilots Amanda Barker and Dave Beckett obtained an AirTag signal during the search. Bad weather cut short a search day after another signal was detected. They found LouLou after about 50 hours. Padawer says she appears to have broken a toe and a canine tooth.
