Vodacom has announced plans to invest R1 billion in network infrastructure in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province during its 2027 financial year. The operator says the programme aims to expand coverage, increase capacity and improve network resilience. Its regional managing executive, Imran Khan, said the investment follows R1.1 billion invested in the province the previous year.
Approximately R419 million is allocated to radio network expansion and modernisation, including new sites and LTE and 5G upgrades. The work targets urban centres, townships and rural communities. Named municipalities include eThekwini, Msunduzi, Nkandla, Richmond and eDumbe. More than R173 million is earmarked for transmission infrastructure, including upgrades to fibre and microwave links.
A further R63.5 million is allocated to energy resilience, covering generators, batteries and backup power systems. Vodacom identified localised load reduction, cable theft and municipal infrastructure failures as power risks. The operator also offers Easy2Own device financing to help customers obtain smartphones and move from older networks to 4G or 5G.
