Brazil's Senate approved a constitutional amendment on October 14 to cut the maximum working week from 44 hours to 40. The measure provides two rest days each week without reducing salaries. It passed both rounds of Senate voting by 75 votes to one in the chamber, which has 81 seats. Approval does not mean an immediate change: businesses have 14 months to adopt the new schedule.

The government estimates that more than 37 million workers could benefit. However, informal workers, including freelancers and delivery drivers, are outside the legislation's coverage. Many business owners opposed the measure, while allies of Flávio Bolsonaro raised concerns that the new schedule could increase the cost of living.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva supported the amendment. Bolsonaro also voted for it after reversing his earlier opposition. The Senate decision comes ahead of the October 25 presidential runoff, in which Lula and Bolsonaro will face each other.
