At a Smithsonian animal-care facility in Front Royal, Virginia, a cheetah named Zura is settling into life with five newborn cubs. The five-year-old became a mother for the first time on October 5. Keepers describe her babies as healthy, active and strong, and say Zura is attending carefully to her litter.
For now, staff are keeping direct handling to a minimum, giving the cubs time to establish a strong relationship with their mother. The family is away from public display, but a live camera inside the den allows people to watch without entering the space. Keepers expect mother and cubs to share their sleeping den for about six or seven months.
As the youngsters grow, they will naturally begin sleeping separately. Other members of their family are nearby: Zura’s mother, Rosalie, lives at the same facility with Zura’s grandmother, Sanurra. With the arrival of these five cubs, four generations now live there.
