Brazil's National Institute for Amazonian Research, INPA, and Japan's Chiba University have signed a five-year academic-exchange agreement. The online signing took place on October 20 in Japan, corresponding to October 19 in Manaus, where INPA is based in Amazonas state. Chiba announced the agreement on October 26. The signatories were university president Kotaro Yokote and INPA director Henrique dos Santos Pereira.
The partners plan to combine INPA's biodiversity resources and natural-product libraries with Chiba's expertise in mucosal immunology, infectious diseases and vaccines. Research aims include drug discovery from Amazon-derived compounds, immune-boosting adjuvants and next-generation mucosal vaccines. Other planned topics cover the microbiome, inflammatory bowel disease and interactions between hosts and microbes.
Plans also include researcher exchanges, education, internships and technology transfer. Discussions following Chiba professor Yosuke Kurashima's June visit to Manaus led to the agreement. The institutions will also work towards a 2029 event marking 100 years of Japanese settlement in the Amazon.
