An exhibition of contemporary prints inspired by Japan is listed for October 26–December 11 at the Japan Information & Culture Center at the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC. Participating artists are affiliated with Discover Graphics Atelier in Alexandria, Virginia. They were asked to respond to Japanese art and culture through printmaking. Admission is free.
The works use woodcut, linocut, etching and lithography. Artists found inspiration in historical and contemporary artworks, everyday cultural practices, travel and research. Encounters with Japanese and Japanese American artists also informed their work. Their new prints interpret and transform these influences through different materials and techniques, in works created for the exhibition.
For historical context, ukiyo-e developed in Edo, now Tokyo, as a tradition of paintings and prints. Traditional woodblock production divided tasks among an artist, carver and printer, transferring carved designs and colours onto paper. Discover Graphics Atelier, established in 1983, is an educational non-profit providing printmaking instruction and facilities.
