A first-letters ceremony at UW Mall in Bur Dubai brought together 129 young children from all seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. Following Kerala's Vidyarambham tradition, children traced letters in rice with adults' guidance. Many parents said work and other circumstances had prevented them from arranging the ceremony back in Kerala.
Some children initially clung to their mothers and refused to write, then said they could stay with teachers while their parents left. Others asked questions, wanted to sing or asked to write again. Teachers gave them chocolate. Grandparents and uncles also joined parents at the event, and children received gifts including coloured pencils and school bags.
Nithin and Vaishnavi travelled 355 kilometres from Ghayathi near the Saudi border, leaving at 3 a.m. and reaching Dubai after 7:30 a.m. Kevin and Diana Sharon travelled 280 kilometres from Al Dhafra with their daughter in a family party of six. They left at 4:30 a.m., drove slowly through fog and arrived around 9 a.m.
