India's private-sector business activity expanded faster in October, according to an advance survey released by S&P Global on October 23. The seasonally adjusted composite output index, covering manufacturing and services, rose to 56.7 from September's final 55.9, its highest in four months. Readings above 50 indicate activity increased from the previous month; readings below 50 indicate a decline.
The services business activity index climbed to 56.2 from 55.2, while the broader manufacturing PMI slipped to 54.9 from 55.1. Employment growth was the weakest so far in 2026. Services staffing was unchanged after nine consecutive months of job creation, while manufacturing staffing increased slightly. Companies said existing staffing was sufficient for current workloads.
Input-cost inflation slowed for the seventh consecutive month to its lowest in almost a year. Selling-price inflation was the weakest since March 2025. The flash findings are advance estimates, with final October PMI readings expected in early November.
