Daito city in Japan's Osaka Prefecture released details on October 23 of a festival gathering planned for November 8 at Daito Central Park. Marking the city's 70th anniversary, the event will be its first such gathering in 10 years. It will bring together 27 danjiri festival floats and two mikoshi, or portable shrines.
Danjiri are large, decorated floats pulled with ropes. Daito's examples feature elaborate carvings and decorative curtains, and many follow the large Kitakawachi style. The tradition remains closely linked to shrine festivals celebrating abundant harvests, while musical traditions vary between districts. An entrance parade starts at 10 a.m., followed by performances in five groups from noon.
Visitors can inspect the carvings during the departure parade from 1 p.m. From around 2 p.m., beginners and children can help pull a danjiri with ropes. Admission is free, and the gathering runs until 4 p.m. It will go ahead in light rain but will be cancelled in severe weather.
