The International Monetary Fund, an international financial institution, forecast 4.5% economic growth across Africa in 2026 at a briefing on 15 October. The briefing took place during IMF and World Bank meetings in Bangkok, Thailand. Zeine Zeidane, director of the IMF African department, predicted a 12% fall in development assistance to Africa this year.
Zeidane identified renewed energy-supply disruption, greater global risk aversion and strong El Niño conditions as risks. Guinea, a West African country with iron ore resources, is pursuing the Simandou mining project. Economy, Finance and Budget Minister Mariama Cire Sylla described its railway linking mines to the coast and a government goal of using mining to develop other economic sectors.
Burkina Faso, also in West Africa, has opened its first gold refinery, according to the country's finance minister, Aboubakar Nacanabo. He described a policy of retaining more economic value from natural resources through processing.
