Champ, a 10-year-old Yorkie mix and certified therapy dog from Cohoes in New York State, has won the 2026 World’s Cutest Rescue Dog Contest. The result was announced on October 19 after public voting and judging by a panel. Champ has three legs and regularly visits schools, airports and assisted living facilities with his owner, Susan Carmody.
People cuddle Champ during those visits. Carmody, a special education teacher, also takes him into her classes, where she says students treat him like a celebrity. She reports seeing people’s faces brighten when the pair arrive. After his adoption, Champ became a therapy dog certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
He was originally rescued as a stray in Texas with a serious rear-leg injury. Veterinarians recommended amputation as his best prospect of living without pain. Carmody adopted him in November 2023, about a month after surgery, and found that he could already run, jump and play.
