Omani halwa is popular across much of the Arabian Peninsula, including the UAE, where it is served at weddings and other social gatherings. A Japanese manga short uses the fictional Layla-san to introduce Arabian sweets, including the distinction between soft Gulf halwa and rahash, a sesame-based sweet with a dense, crumbly texture and strong sesame character.
Ghee, sugar, spices and nuts are among the ingredients used in halwa, while cornstarch is important to its distinctive soft texture. Large shared bowls are a traditional way to present it. Individually packaged portions have become more common in recent years for hygiene reasons.
The manga is a doujinshi, a self-published work for a particular audience, by Shirakawa Seibei, who has visited the Middle East multiple times. Layla-san comes from the Japanese game Idolmaster Cinderella Girls and has a Dubai family background. The short explains variations in sweets across the Arabian Peninsula, Gulf states and North Africa.
