India's merchandise exports rose 23% from a year earlier to $44.4 billion in September, according to figures released by the Commerce and Industry Ministry on October 15. Imports increased 8% to $74.61 billion. The merchandise trade deficit, the amount by which goods imports exceed exports, narrowed to about $30.2 billion from $33 billion in September last year. Exports had stood at $36.08 billion and imports at $69.08 billion a year earlier.
Exports to the United States grew 48% to more than $8 billion. Electronic exports increased 70.4% to $5.3 billion. On the import side, gold purchases fell 81.3% to $1.8 billion, while imports from China rose 31.5% to $14.86 billion. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal suggested high duties on gold imports could be one reason for the sharp decline in gold purchases.
Estimated services exports slipped to $36.35 billion from $36.67 billion a year earlier. Agarwal said higher energy prices and the conflict in West Asia had affected travel and tourism.
