Thailand is expanding research cooperation with Japan as it seeks to add research and technology testing to its manufacturing role. A government spokesperson outlined the discussions on October 14, 2026. Talks involving Kyoto University and Osaka University covered artificial intelligence, semiconductors, materials, medicine and quantum computing. Officials also discussed matching research funding and connecting researchers with industry needs.
Thailand’s National Research Council and Kyoto University signed a letter of intent on October 5 covering joint research financing and researcher exchanges. One objective is to use AI to speed up the selection and design of advanced materials. Thai ministry plans would connect knowledge from Kyoto’s AI 4 M-hub with the Siam Silica semiconductor initiative.
Thailand also proposed federated learning using research data from both countries and high-performance computers operated by NSTDA for materials research. A proposed regulatory sandbox would allow Japanese researchers and businesses to test technology in Thailand. Cooperation with Osaka could extend Mahidol University’s existing work on tropical diseases and vaccines.
