India's annual consumer inflation rose to 5.54% in September, from 4.83% in August, according to figures released on October 12. The rate remains within the Reserve Bank of India's tolerance range of 2% to 6%, but above its medium-term target of 4%. The headline increase comes alongside evidence that price pressures are spreading across the basket.
Of the 358 items in India's consumer price index, 129 recorded annual inflation of at least 4% in September, compared with 65 in January. The RBI's weighted diffusion index puts the September share at approximately 46%, up from 37% in August and 16% in January. That measure weights items by their importance in household consumption.
Inflation generalisation means sustained price increases spreading across different household goods and services. Annual inflation compares prices with the same month a year earlier; monthly momentum compares them with the previous month. The RBI identified broadening pressures on October 7. Nomura economists had assessed August's generalisation as below their historical average, an assessment referring to that earlier month.
