Five teenagers helped rescue an injured hiker on Mount Shasta in northern California as part of an 11-member Marin County search and rescue team. The 39-year-old man from Florida had fallen into a crevasse and spent two days trapped with a broken leg. Two U.S. Forest Service rangers pulled him out before the ground teams helped move him down the mountain.
The rescue site was about 12,000 feet up the mountain. Winds of 60 mph and severe weather prevented a helicopter from reaching that altitude. Ground teams faced freezing conditions, steep icy terrain and loose boulders. Team members provided medical care and used a rope system to lower the patient down the slope.
At a lower altitude, a California Highway Patrol helicopter took him to hospital. According to the rescue team’s October 23 report, he was receiving treatment for frostbite and a broken leg and was expected to recover. The rescue took place earlier that week.
