Fans vote to choose a new Godzilla opponent

Toho, the organiser of an online vote in Japan, is asking fans to choose a new opponent for Godzilla. The candidates are kaiju, the giant fictional monsters of Japanese films. Four finalists remain from eight original entries, with the final voting phase running from October 17 to 25, 2026. Voters can read character biographies and inspect concept art before selecting a favourite.
The finalists include an octopus-like visitor from another universe, a human-built drone carrier, a planet-devouring space monster and an ancient dinosaur frozen in ice. Xenolhu, the first of these, led the previous round with 46,066 points, followed by Sagius on 34,202, Glix on 28,724 and Rigedoh on 18,846.
The winner will be announced on November 3 at Godzilla Fest 2026 at Tokyo’s Takanawa Gateway Convention Center. Producers plan to feature the winning character in a special battle short at the following year’s festival. They are also considering other contestants for possible future projects.
