Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier with some Chihuahua ancestry, was reunited with her owners on October 14. Her owners live in California and had been staying at a vacation cabin in Yellowstone. Luna escaped from the cabin on September 10. Katie Boucher, who led the volunteer search and spoke for the family, said Luna had entered lodges through automatic doors and returned to places her family had visited.
Searchers placed fabric carrying the family's scent inside a live trap. They avoided food because it could attract bears and other wildlife. Local shopkeeper Marie Jaskula put missing-dog notices at each park entrance. Boucher said calling to Luna or chasing her had driven her farther away.
Boucher and one of Luna's owners found her inside the trap. That afternoon, an owner held the small dog during her veterinary examination. Boucher described Luna as underweight but alert and in good spirits.
