Sibu, a young orphaned elephant, was rescued in Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park on January 20, 2026. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust says she was under three years old. She was very thin and dehydrated, and a spear wound on her right shoulder had become infected. The team took her by road to its Kaluku Unit.
The day after the rescue, Dr Lawi cleaned her wound. Sibu also received antibiotics and medicine to reduce inflammation. During her early recovery, she stayed next to Lamuu, another orphaned elephant who had injured a foot in a snare. The two became close friends, and Sibu now feeds on plants with Lamuu.
In its October 9 update, the Trust reported that only a faint scar remained on Sibu’s shoulder. She joins the herd on outings and goes swimming. At milk time, she uses her own bucket instead of a bottle. She also lets Korbessa lead the herd.
