A family in Los Angeles has found an unexpected way to revisit a childhood home that disappeared decades ago. In September, Vicki Rodriguez and relatives visited Central Library to see drawings by artist Leo Politi. He had sketched their Bunker Hill neighbourhood before redevelopment forced its residents to leave and their houses were demolished.
As children, the family members remembered watching a friendly man work with paints and an easel. They knew their home appeared in his book, but they had not seen all the original artwork. At the library, a librarian opened boxes containing unfamiliar sketches and paintings, including another picture of their house.
The pictures preserved small details of their lives, even Ruby’s pet cat, Poncho. Vicki said seeing the artwork was a dream come true. A few days later, the relatives returned so the librarian could record their memories. Their old neighbourhood now survives through both an artist’s pictures and the voices of people who grew up there.
