Community Space Food Bank in Los Angeles is seeing more people who have never needed its help before. Founder Gaines Newborn told LAist that new daily visitors rose from a range of 2 to 10 people to a range of 30 to 40. Some say they lost work or had food benefits reduced. The increase comes while the organization is facing financial problems of its own.

The food bank operates every day and provides about 150 hot meals a day as well as pantry groceries for around 100 families, according to Newborn. People can still receive food if they cannot make the suggested donation. Local food businesses supply surplus products, and an outdoor community refrigerator is available around the clock. The service aims to reduce both hunger and avoidable food waste.

The organization is seeking $17,000 to cover the next 2 months of expenses while hoping to buy its building. Stolen or broken vehicles and damaged freezers have made its work harder. Gaines and his wife, Hang, also want to expand freeze-drying, which preserves surplus food and makes it easier to prepare later. Their plans remain ambitions, but the daily food service is already helping neighbors.
